Wes Burns could yet still have a part to play in Ipswich Town's promotion push following the news that he doesn't require surgery on his hamstring.

The winger was forced off in the recent 6-0 home win against Sheffield Wednesday and subsequently had to pull out of the Wales squad for crunch EURO 2024 play-off games.

"He’s seen the specialist now," explained Blues boss Kieran McKenna. "As we suspected, it's certainly not a short-term injury to his hamstring, but no surgery required and he's doing okay.

“We'll have it rescanned in a week or so and we'll know a lot more than about how long the recovery's going to be.

"It's not impossible he plays again this season, but it's a long way from guaranteed either. It really is a case of wait and see."

Town are currently third in the Championship table, a point behind both Leicester and Leeds. There are just eight games to go now, starting with Easter weekend fixtures against Blackburn (away, Friday, 5.30pm) and Southampton (home, Monday, 5.30pm).

McKenna admits he has a judgement to make on how many minutes to give Cameron Burgess, Jeremy Sarmiento and Kieffer Moore following their busy international breaks.

Sarmiento started for Ecuador, in New York, against Italy on Sunday, while Burgess started for Australia, in Canberra, against Lebanon on Tuesday night.

Moore played 120 minutes for Wales last night as Rob Page's men missed out on a place at EURO 2024 courtesy of a penalty shootout defeat to Poland in Cardiff. Nathan Broadhead stepped off the bench in extra-time of that match.

"We'll make the best of the cards that are in front of us and prepare as well as we can for the game," said McKenna.

"We'll have to make a judgement call on some. Kieffer's a very robust man, both physically and mentally, and he always wants to be available. He's an important player for the team.

"On the other hand, last night didn't go how he or we would have wanted. We would have wanted fewer minutes and Wales going through and he would have wanted Wales going through.

"We'll speak with him over the next day or so, try and make the right decision for Friday night, but also know that from Friday we've got five games in 15 days and a really busy and important spell coming up.

"It's the same with Cameron. He had an easier game and a less emotional game, but he's had a lot of travel to do. He arrives back in the UK this evening."

Blackburn loanee Lewis Travis is ineligible to face his parent club, Janoi Donacien is still struggling with a groin injury, while George Hirst was 'back on the grass' this week as he stepped up his recovery from hamstring surgery.
