β€œLeeds are going up,” has been the soundtrack to this season’s promotion push and it rang around Elland Road as Marcelo Bielsa’s team eyed the promised land. Ninety minutes later, they were not going up any more.

Not automatically, unless Sheffield United slip up. Now Leeds’ destiny is out of their own hands. Their exile in the lower leagues, spanning 15 years and 687 games, plus the odd play-off heartache, may not have just three more matches to go. β€œLeeds are falling apart again,” crowed the Wigan fans, but even a club with United’s tortured, chequered past have had few more damaging days.

β€œWe will heal this wound only by getting promoted,” Bielsa said. Leeds had problems on and off the pitch, and they are investigating Βallegations their fans threw objects at Wigan players. Coins were thrown on to the pitch in the victory over Millwall here this month.

Bielsa, who had urged supporters to calm down, branded defeat the worst moment of his reign and added: β€œYou have games like today that you have to win. I have no explanation that justifies a loss like this. We had all the ingredients to win. At this moment of the season, we had everything in our favour and we couldn’t take advantage.”

Leeds faced 10 men for 76 Βminutes, led and still lost. Whereas ΒSheffield United had an opponent sent off and took advantage to beat Nottingham Forest, Leeds showed their self-destructive streak to trail their Yorkshire rivals in second on goal difference.

Wigan had Cedric Kipre wrongly sent off, but channelled feelings of injustice brilliantly. A magnificent rearguard action and Gavin Massey’s goals earned a massive win, their first on the road since August.Β

β€œPeople who watched us would wonder why we had the worst away record in the league,” said Paul Cook, their manager. Play like this and they will not go down to League One for the third time in five years. Play like this and Leeds will not be heading to the Premier League.

Bielsa shouldered the blame. β€œHonestly, I don’t think the players are responsible,” he said. Yet Pablo Hernandez became the second Leeds player to miss a penalty in three weeks. They had 36 shots and 15 corners, but only scored once. Leeds are the only one of the top five who do not have a 20-goal striker. That lack of a clinical touch could come at huge cost.

In Patrick Bamford’s defence, he took his tally into double figures and reduced Wigan to 10 men, Βalbeit harshly. β€œDestiny gave us a hand,” admitted Bielsa.Β

Yet Kipre did not handle, the ball rebounding off his chest as he blocked Bamford’s shot on the line. Referee Scott Duncan nevertheless sent off the centre-back. Hernandez, who rolled his penalty against a post, spared Wigan further punishment.

β€œThe first thought is β€˜how many can we keep it down to?’” admitted Cook. Leeds were one up when Bamford controlled the rampaging Luke Ayling’s cross, spun and shot past Christian Walton.

Yet Leeds nerves were apparent. β€œA mental weakness that was not expected,” Bielsa said. Gaetano Berardi almost gifted Leon Clarke an equaliser before Massey latched on to Lee Evans’s pass to rifle Wigan level. Having scored three goals all season, he got two in 18 minutes, heading past a motionless Kiko Casilla. The selfless assist came from Clarke, the on-loan Sheffield United striker doing his parent club a huge favour. Wigan almost got a third when the outstanding Reece James clipped the bar with a free-kick and should have been awarded a penalty.

But Leeds exerted almost perpetual pressure. Wigan winger Kal ΒNaismith was a heroic makeshift centre-back after Kipre’s red card and Cook added: β€œThe players defended manfully. Your goalkeeper has to play well if you want to win at Leeds.” Walton did, denying the substitute Kemar Roofe, Bamford, Hernandez and Ezgjan Alioski.Β

Wigan’s celebrations at the final whistle were euphoric, with Cook bounding around the pitch, but Bielsa was morose. A year’s efforts could be in vain. He said: β€œThe Βresult condemns my work.”

Full-time: Leeds 1 Wigan 2

The final whistle goes, and Wigan have done it! Despite playing with 10 men for 76 minutes, relegation-threatened Wigan have won 2-1 to deal Leeds' promotion push a hammer blow.

90+6 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

Hernandez has a free-kick out wide on the left that he floats far close to Walton, who can make an easy claim. That should be that.

90+3 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

Wigan goalkeeper Walton is booked for time-wasting.

90+2 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

Fittingly that run is James's final contribution. He looks on the point of collapse and has almost literally run himself into the ground. He is replaced by Garner.

James of course is still a Chelsea player. Any chance of some game time next season?

90 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

James has run about half the pitch and looks set to score.... but instead he falls to the ground wanting a penalty. Scott Duncan says no, but what a run that was from James! Absolutely electric.

86 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

Harrison sizes one up and curls an effort from 25 yards that's deflected wide for a corner. From the resulting delivery, Olsson smashes a volley high and wide. Time is ticking away.

83 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

Hernandez belatedly locates his shooting boots, but Walton makes a good stop to deny him. Leeds piling on the pressure as we enter the final stages.

81 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

James has been superb for Wigan today, and he's wreaking havoc again. He evades a couple of Leeds challenges before eventually running out of steam and dragging his shot wide.

79 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

Alioski is sent flying as he goes for a header from a Leeds corner. No foul though, as Wigan continue to hold firm.

76 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

Harrison bends in another dangerous cross from the left, but again there's no one there to profit. Bamford was the closest to it but seemed oddly disinterested.

75 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

Massey, who's been superb today and scored both goals, is replaced by Powell. Massey must be injured because his pace is giving Wigan such an important outlet here.

73 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

It's nearly 3-1! From the resulting free-kick James catches Casilla out with an effort at his near post that clips the crossbar. Casilla was anticipating a cross and very nearly looked extremely stupid.

72 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

There's that threat I was talking about. Massey eats up about 30 yards with his pace, and eventually draws a foul from Berardi, who is booked for his troubles.

71 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

Leeds make a change: Glick off - Clarke on. Can they rescue this? It doesn't really look like it at the moment, Wigan defending superbly and carrying a real threat on the counter with Massey.

70 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

This is grade A s---housery from Evans. He flies into a tackle for which he's booked and then collapses to the ground to receive lengthy treatment. Leeds are furious.

67 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

Wigan make a change - Olsson coming on for the very impressive Clarke.

64 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 2

Harrison puts in a dangerous cross that eludes everyone in the box. Elland Road is getting edgier and edgier - all the noise is coming from the disbelieving Wigan end.

GOAL! Leeds 1 Wigan 2 (Massey 62')

Oh my, it goes from bad to worse for Leeds. Ten-man Wigan are in front! Byrne hoists up a cross, which Clarke heads across goal for Massey to nod home. Wow, disaster looming for Leeds.

59 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 1

Ayling booked for a late tackle after being sold short by Roofe's misplaced pass. Frustration building for Leeds.

57 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 1

Lovely Leeds move sees Bamford cushion Hernandez's pass into Glick's path. Glick can't keep his effort down though, smashing a shot high and wide from the edge of the box.

55 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 1

Hernandez snatches at an effort from just outside the box and it's blocked. Hernandez not having his best game today.

54 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 1

Klich goes down under a pretty hefty tackle just outside the box. Referee Scott Duncan says no free-kick.

51 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 1

What a chance for Leeds! The substitute Roofe is plum in front of goal, about six yards out, but he heads straight at Walton. He really should have scored there.

48 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 1

Wigan win a corner that Leeds head clear. Good start from the visitors in the second half.

46 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 1

Double substitution for Leeds at the break. Roofe and Forshaw on for Phillips and Roberts. We're back under way at Elland Road.

Nervy moments

I'm not really sure how Leeds aren't ahead here but a missed penalty and a sucker-punch of an equaliser has us level at half-time.

Half-time: Leeds 1 Wigan 1

The half-time whistle blows. It's Leeds 1 10-man Wigan 1.

45 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 1

Klich is booked for the most cynical pull-back on Massey, who was absolutely flying clear on the counter. Wigan fans want a red, which it never was, but it's one of those that feels like it should be more than a yellow. Unbelievably cynical.

GOAL! Leeds 1 Wigan 1 (Massey 44')

Where on earth has that come from?! Wigan are level through Massey. Leeds give the ball away, and Wigan work the ball to Massey who slashes past Casillas at the near post. What a huge goal that could be in the relegation and promotion fight.

43 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 0

Wigan are temporarily down to nine men when Morsi is taken off for treatment. Leeds make a mess of their free-kick though to let their opponents off the hook.

42 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 0

Roberts thinks he's scored when his volley beats Walton, but Naismith pops up on the line to head clear. Great defending to keep it at 1-0.

40 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 0

Hernandez has a decent effort blocked from the edge of the box. Leeds piling on the pressure but the second remains elusive.

36 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 0

Rapid Leeds passing almost leads to a chance before Bamford is eventually crowded out. Poor touch there or he would have been.

31 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 0

Bamford has the chance of a second goal, but he makes a complete mess of converting Klich's cross.

30 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 0

More last-ditch Wigan defending as James clears from just under his own crossbar. Phillips then has a pop from range that Walton holds onto.

29 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 0

Lovely work by Hernandez, who twists and turns his way into the box before being denied by James. From the resulting corner Jansson's header is easily caught by Walton.

27 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 0

A quieter last few minutes, with Leeds seemingly not entirely sure whether to go for the kill or protect what they have. Wigan digging in.

24 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 0

Nervy moment for Leeds as Harrison underhits a backpass that Clarke latches onto. He round Casilla but from about 20 yards hoiks his effort over the bar.

22 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 0

Dunkley is forced to slice a cross clear for a corner. It looked for a second like that might be an own goal.

20 min - Leeds 1 Wigan 0

Massive ask for Wigan now down to 10 men. Leeds just stroking it around and wearing their opponents out.

GOAL! Leeds 1 Wigan 0 (Bamford 17')

Leeds are in front! Beautifully taken by Bamford, who brings the ball down and fires beyond Walton from about 12 yards out. As it stands, they're three points clear of Sheffield United.

16 min - Leeds 0 Wigan 0

Hernandez misses the penalty. He hits the post! It's still 0-0!

14 min - Leeds 0 Wigan 0

Red card! Kipre handballs on the line and is sent off. It's a penalty for Leeds.

13 min - Leeds 0 Wigan 0

Wigan have started positively, and Clarke has headed a decent chance wide.

8 min - Leeds 0 Wigan 0

Leeds go close through Hernandez, who smashes a loose ball goalwards that Kipre heads clear on the line.

7 min - Leeds 0 Wigan 0

Really good atmosphere at Elland Road. Leeds so close to promotion now, but every win feels tough when there's this much pressure on.

5 min - Leeds 0 Wigan 0

Wigan turned Leeds around like Sheffield Wednesday did last week. An early attempt at a psychological blow.

A reminder of the teams for this one:

The home straight

With four games left of the season, we are most definitely in squeaky bum time. And if Leeds can keep their nerve then they will be back in the Premier League for the first time in 16 years.

After Sheffield United's win over Nottingham Forest earlier, Leeds are out of the promotion spots on goal difference but will return to second if they avoid defeat this afternoon against Wigan.

In reality, only a win will do for Marcelo Bielsa's team against a Wigan side that are one place, and two points above the relegation zone.

Kick-off is at 3pm and after last week's 1-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday, Marcelo Bielsa has named an unchanged side.

They will line up as follows:

Leeds: Casilla; Alioski, Berardi, Jansson, Ayling; Phillips; Klich, Harrison, Hernandez, Roberts; Bamford

Wigan make just the one change from the side that held leaders Norwich last week, with Cedric Kipre replacing the injured Danny Fox.

Wigan: Walton; Byrne, Dunkley, Kipre, Robinson; Morsy, James; Naismith, Evans, Massey; Clarke
