West Brom 1-1 Reading – Match Review

West Bromwich Albion played host to Reading last night under the lights at the Hawthorns as they drew 1-1 in an entertaining encounter.

Baggies boss Slaven Bilic made three changes to his line up as Grady Diangana, Darnell Furlong and Charlie Austin came in for Kyle Edwards, Nathan Ferguson and Kenneth Zohore.

Less than three minutes in, Furlong should have been awarded a penalty when he was felled by Omar Richards as he hurtled forwards with pace but the appeals were waved away in what proved to be a very questionable decision from the officials.

West Brom were certainly quick in coming out of the blocks as they pressed for the breakthrough with plenty of shots being blocked by the Royals’ defence in particular from good attacking play by Austin.

Reading did have some good moments of their own as John Swift shot just over from range before testing Sam Johnstone with a free-kick.

Albion were having the lions share of possession but despite their dominance with the ball they struggled to test the Reading keeper.

There were some occasions where West Brom were winning the ball further up the pitch but Romaine Sawyers uncharacteristically gave the ball away more than usual.

Ejaria stung Johnstone’s palms from a narrow angle and the Reading midfielder was enjoying an impressive game but for all their quick passing, the Royals’ best chance of the first half came when Michael Morrison shot straight at Johnstone from a corner.

The Baggies started to up the tempo in the second half and they had another penalty shout turned down on the hour mark when Krovinovic went down after a one-two with Diangana leaving the fans incensed.

Matheus Pereira replaced Diangana and the Brazilian showed some neat touches when he was introduced and had a couple of shots without really testing the keeper.

However, the deadlock was soon broken by the visitors. When Albion stood off Reading’s best player he waltzed forward and curled a shot into the top corner that left Johnstone rooted to the spot.

With 15 minutes left, Zohore came on to replace Austin and he made the desired impact. Ejaria went through the back of Krovinovic in the penalty area giving the £8million summer signing the perfect opportunity to open his account for the club.

He held his nerve well, sending Rafael the wrong way to rescue a point and get his campaign up and running.
