Queens Park Rangers 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday: Owls progress from all-Championship contest

By Steve SutcliffeBBC Sport

Sheffield Wednesday edged past QPR in an all-Championship contest to book their place in the FA Cup fifth round.

Left-back Morgan Fox opened the scoring and Sam Winnall's late goal sealed Wednesday's progression despite Nakhi Wells' late consolation goal.

It ensured a welcome return to winning ways for the Owls, who were thrashed by Blackburn on Saturday.

The fifth-round draw will be shown live on BBC One on The One Show on Monday 27 January, at around 19:20 GMT.

QPR's fast start laid the platform for their emphatic 5-1 third-round win over Swansea, but they exhibited very little fluency or attacking threat in the early stages of this encounter.

While both managers made wholesale changes, it was the hosts who appeared to suffer the most as the Owls took control.

Wednesday, who have won this competition three times, took the lead when Sam Hutchinson's quick throw-in caught out two home defenders and Fox collected possession unchallenged in the penalty area to fire a left-footed effort under goalkeeper Joe Lumley.

Rangers did rally after the break, with Julian Borner's superb tackle denying Eberechi Eze an equalising goal and Ilias Chair driving an effort just wide of the left corner.

However, Garry Monk's side, who won 1-0 at Premier League Brighton in the third round, always looked comfortable in defence.

And they killed the game off in a dramatic conclusion, with Adam Reach leading a counter-attack to set-up Sam Winnall's close-range finish, before Wells rounded Cameron Dawson to slide in a second stoppage-time goal.

'We wanted to restore a bit of pride' - what they said

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk: "It was a tough game again but it was a good performance from ourselves. There was a bit of drama at the end but I'm very pleased to get into the fifth round.

"We had a hugely disappointing result in the last game and with 3,000 fans travelling here we wanted to restore a bit of pride into that shirt.

"Our challenge and ambition today was to show pride, no matter what the result was. We had to repay the fans and make amends."

QPR boss Mark Warburton: "I feel like we have gone out without having a real crack at it tonight. It was a poor goal.

"We had a couple of big chances that we have to score. To score at the death is almost irrelevant - the damage was done earlier.

"It was a cheap sloppy goal to give away, track your runners. We got into good areas but never felt threatening in the first half. If you give away a cheap goal you pay the price."
