Premier League green light offers promotion boost for Leeds United and West Brom

It was announced yesterday that the Premier League had given the green light for football to resume on the pitch from June 17 setting a precedent for the Championship.

As reported by the Birmingham Mail, this could have an effect on Leeds United and West Brom’s promotion hopes as they hope to resume the season and achieve promotion on the pitch.

The Premier League have already reintroduced contact training as part of Phase 2 of their return to football action and it is hoped that the Championship will soon follow suit.

West Brom and Leeds have made no secret of their desire to complete the campaign on the pitch but there has not yet been confirmation from the EFL that this will be the case.

There are still believed to be some clubs in the Championship, one of them being Hull City, that want the season to be curtailed due to ‘sporting integrity’ and for the safety of the players.

The news that the Premier League is set to begin again is largely due to the fact of such few positive Coronavirus cases and with it believed that as long as safety guidelines are adhered to then a resumption is safe to take place.

However, should the number of Coronavirus cases rise, or health becomes an issue then there is still the possibility of both the top flight and the Championship being curtailed.

In the event of this happening, it has already been agreed that there will be an unweighted points-per-game system to determine champions, European places and relegation.

The Championship is soon to take part in a vote to decide if the season will be resumed with a 51% majority needed either way in which to make a decision.
