Birmingham City's Championship clash at home to Norwich was briefly stopped due to a medical emergency in the crowd

Blues must beat their promotion-chasing opponents at St Andrew's on Saturday to ensure they avoid relegation to League One. But the fixture was stopped for a short break in play just after the 20-minute mark following an incident in the lower Kop stand.

Sky Sports commentator Seb Hutchinson claimed that the stoppage was due to a medical emergency. "We understand it is a medical emergency, to confirm that," he said.

Birmingham went in at half-time with the scores level at 0-0, meaning they will be relegated as it stands. Elsewhere in the relegation battle, Plymouth lead Hull 1-0, Sheffield Wednesday are 2-0 up at Sunderland and Blackburn are drawing 0-0 at Leicester.

Blues moved quickly on Thursday to clarify reports surrounding the future of interim boss Gary Rowett. There were claims that Rowett's role would be made permanent after Tony Mowbray temporarily stepped aside in February to receive treatment for an illness.

"Birmingham City Football Club wishes to issue the following response to a media report relating to Interim Manager, Gary Rowett," the club said in a statement.

"The timeline of Rowett’s tenure remains the same as when he was appointed in March. He will oversee the Men’s First Team for the final game of the Sky Bet Championship season against Norwich City on Saturday.

"Tony Mowbray remains the Club’s First Team Manager and the football club expects everyone to remain respectful of his circumstance."
